Victory in Camas: WSDA Advocacy on Community Water Fluoridation & What’s Next

On July 7, due to the collective advocacy efforts of WSDA, the Clark County Dental Society, our members, and other oral health advocacy groups, the Camas City Council voted to maintain access to community water fluoridation.

WSDA is thrilled to share a win for protecting public health in our state. On July 7, due to the collective advocacy efforts of WSDA, the Clark County Dental Society, our members, and other oral health advocacy groups, the Camas City Council voted to maintain access to community water fluoridation. This vote reinforced the importance of this vital public health measure, ensuring access to water fluoridation for the residents of Camas.

As the City of Camas considered removing fluoride from its water supply, WSDA engaged with council members, equipped local dentists with talking points and recent studies, submitted correspondence in April and again in July urging the full Camas City Council to maintain fluoride, and assisted in coordinating testimony efforts during the public hearing.

Though this is a victory worth celebrating, the work to ensure Washington residents have access to fluoridated water is far from over.

Pasco and Water Fluoridation

While the vote in Camas was a victory for public health, now the attention must shift to the City of Pasco. On July 1, the Pasco City Council voted to initiate a review to potentially end fluoridation of the public water supply for city residents.

Just like the efforts in Camas, WSDA is committed to providing support to members and the community through testimonial templates, scientific research summaries, communication with Pasco City Councilmembers, and other resources.

Based on the Pasco water fluoridation page, the Council plans to hold two public feedback sessions in August and September, and a public hearing is likely to follow.

Get Involved

Interested parties can attend the Pasco City Council feedback sessions either in person or virtually, and WSDA encourages members to register and provide feedback to Council members on the benefits of community water fluoridation.
